When a bartender asks you to pick your poison, he is closer to the truth than you know. Consuming massive
amounts of alcohol can kill a person. Alcohol poisoning symptoms are more common in teenagers and usually occurs
when a person drinks high proof beverages.
Drinking pure grain alcohol is always a risky proposition. A patient may experience symptoms of alcohol
poisoning if he drinks rubbing alcohol or wood alcohol. A person attending a party may be able to save someone’s
life if he can recognize the signs of alcohol poisoning.
It is difficult to distinguish the early symptoms of alcohol poisoning from the signs of being drunk. A stupor
and confusion are the first alcohol poisoning symptoms. A person who has been drinking may simply be showing the
signs of being drunk. If he is conscious, keep an eye on him to see if his condition worsens.
If he stops drinking, he may proceed to the next symptom, which is vomiting. If the person remains conscious,
his or her body should eventually remove the alcohol through from his body through the normal metabolism
processes.
More severe alcohol poisoning symptoms include seizures, shallow breathing and a low body temperature. If you
find an unconscious person, check his breathing rate. An extremely low breathing rate is the most serious alcohol
poisoning symptom. If the person undergoes a seizure, clear the area around him and wait the seizure out.
Call 911 if a person you suspect of having alcohol poisoning shows any of these symptoms. You can call
800-222-1222 to be connected directly to your local poison control center, instead of dialing the emergency
services number.
Wait for help to arrive. No matter what you do, do not leave the patient alone. The poison control center will
stay with you until help arrives. When the person suffering from alcohol poisoning gets to the nearest hospital, he
will receive supportive care. He may be put on oxygen, and the hospital staff will monitor the patients airways and
keep his airways from becoming obstructive. A hospital may also give a patient showing alcohol poisoning symptoms
intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration.
The primary element of treating alcohol poisoning symptoms is to keep the patient as comfortable as possible
until the body removes the alcohol from its body. The hospital staff will monitor the patient’s condition. If a
patient suffers from an alcohol addiction, a rehabilitation program may be recommended.
A person of any age can show the alcohol poisoning symptoms if they drink enough alcohol. Parents should keep
bottles of liquor under lock and key. Parents should also be aware of where their teenage sons and daughters are,
although they will not be able to keep tabs on the locations of their children at all times.
How much alcohol a person has to drink before he or she suffers from alcohol depends on their size and their
weight. The key to avoiding the alcohol poisoning is to keep alcohol away from children as much as possible and to
drink in moderation. If an adult cannot manage to drink adult beverages in moderation, he should completely avoid
wine, beer, liquor and other adult beverages.
