Long Term Effects Of Alcoholism

Some people often wonder if alcoholic beverages are considered a drug, especially if one over indulges the use of it. There are many reports that say yes it is a drug, because like most drugs it is absorbed into the blood and carried to every other part of the body, and this includes all the organs. Alcohol is a depressant and people who drink a lot of it will damage their mind as well as their bodies.

Long term effects of alcoholism can destroy the heart and blood vessels. As it causes the small blood vessels just beneath the skin to open, this causes heat loss from the body and will drop the body temperature. It can also cause, trembling, dizziness, headaches and makes your blood pressure rise to dangerous levels.

Being addicted to alcohol will damage the brain when it is used for a long time. As it is a depressant it will depress the central nervous system. In other words it will mess up the function of the brain as well as the body because the brain does all the work. Long term effects of alcoholism will cause depression, slower reflexes, impairs eye sight; and poor judgment occurs.

Over fifteen point two million people, men and women are abusing alcohol and have been for many years. Over thirteen thousand people die each year because of live disease, caused by long term use of alcohol.

Women who are alcoholics and giving birth will not only damage the mother, but the new born child as well. That child will come out of the womb already an alcoholic. It can have life time problems such as mental retardation and other physical problems. Reports state when children are born to alcoholics; they will probably become one as it is hereditary.

One of the biggest and most heartbreaking long term effects of alcoholism is the not so much the alcoholic, but the family and friends that are involved in their life. Every day of their life they see their loved one denying they have a problem, until they either kill some or themselves. The beatings the wives might endure because of the alcoholic husband, the years and years of abuse are heartbreaking to say the least.

Facing the fact that there are alcoholics that will never stop drinking, the long term effects of alcoholism do not affect them. Some say they have a dish wish and figure they might as well enjoy it while they are going down. Some drink because they think the pain and shame in their lives will never go away. They drown their sorrows in booze and do not care about anyone else.

Thankfully there are groups that will help those that are alcoholics. They know the long terms effects of alcoholism and will go to great lengths to help that alcoholic. One step at a time.
